Dear Ward 8 Residents,

Last night, I joined the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for a Ward 8 Listening session at the William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Neighborhood Library. The public was invited to learn more about

the OAG, its work, and its services. The listening session also allowed residents to share their concerns and ideas on ways to collaborate with the OAG.

The OAG laid out its main priorities, which include:
* Prioritizing public safety and youth development
* Promoting equity in communities
* Standing up for democratic values and advancing statehood and;
* Building institutional excellence


Additionally, OAG shared information about its Consumer Mediation Program, a free service where OAG mediates consumer complaints among DC residents, landlords, and businesses headquartered in the District.

The OAG represents the District and protects the public interest by safeguarding the environment, protecting consumers, and standing up for worker and tenant rights. For more information about the role of the OAG, visit, [link removed]

Committee of the Whole | FY24 Budget Oversight Hearing | Opening Remarks

Friday, March 24th

Councilmember Trayon White sits alongside his Council colleagues to continue the conversation with Mayor Muriel Bowser and her team about the FY24 budget proposal they presented on Wednesday, March 22nd.

Councilmember White noted that while the city is facing difficult times in recovering from the pandemic that there are still notable investments that must be made to ensure equity for all residents across the District.

He highlights his appreciation for the investments which were included based on his recommendations: They include:
* $2 million for Violence Interruption work
* $4M for Fort Greble Recreation Center
* $9 million for the Safe Passage program and;
* additional funding to the 2nd Chance Amendment Act

"I notice that a lot of construction projects mentioned in the FY24 budget proposal are the same ones mentioned from the FY 23 budget," stated Councilmember Trayon White.

"I am concerned why [the construction plans for ] Ward 8 schools are being pushed back. We can't wait anymore. We need to get these projects done."

Anacostia High School Hosts "Against All Odds Panel."
Thursday, March 23rd

Councilmember Trayon White joined community leaders and entrepreneurs for a young men's panel themed "Against All Odds." This discussion aimed to highlight men from Washington, D.C., specifically from Ward 8, who have overcome obstacles and are now upstanding citizens in various roles.The discussion was also aimed to demonstrate to male students that they too, can beat the odds.

Ward 8 Women's Symposium
Saturday, March 25th

Councilmember Trayon White Ward 8 Women's Symposium was a success.

The symposium was lined with retail therapy, allowing women to shop till they dropped. Attendees heard from dozens of inspirational speakers and experienced a more intimate setting during the break-out sessions with industry experts.

Councilmember White looks forward to hosting this event again next year.

The Washington Teacher's Union (WTU) President, Jacqueline Pogue Lyons is calling for more resources inside of schools given the recent incidents involving crime and students. "Social workers, counselors, psychologists, the whole gamut of social and emotional support for both students and family," Pogue Lyons tells WUSA9. She added that retaining mental and emotional health specialists has become more difficult.

Youth violence has also garnered the attention of the D.C. council. The council is considering a bill that would keep School Resource Officers (SROs) in both charter and public schools. Two years ago, the council voted to remove all SROs by 2025. The legislation is sponsored by Councilmembers Trayon White, Vincent Gray, Brooke Pinto, and Chairman Phil Mendelson.
