Friend,

You’ve heard us (and every other campaign) talk about the importance of the upcoming March 31 “end-of-quarter” or FEC deadline quite a bit. Let us take you behind the scenes on what tomorrow’s deadline really means:

At the end of each fiscal quarter, federal candidates are required to publicly report how much money they’ve raised, as well as how much they have in the bank. These numbers essentially provide a glimpse into how well a particular campaign is performing, and there is always a last-minute push for contributions in the period leading up to the deadline. (Hence, this email.)

In this last-minute push, campaigns tend to pull out all the stops when it comes to raising money. Some tactics try to scare the heck out of you; some are full of despair; and some can be downright manipulative.

Trust us, we don’t like these tactics either — but fundraising around a deadline does actually tend to be pretty effective. Unfortunately, creating a sense of urgency and continuing to up the stakes does actually get more folks to contribute. It’s gotten to the point that some campaigns will make up fake deadlines, fake consequences, and emergency-like energy in order to continue to drive that sense of urgency.

But that approach has never been my style. So rather than giving you a completely made-up emergency or trying to convince you that the sky is falling, we just lay our cards out on the table, as we’re doing now.

Our goal is to give you the full context as to why these (actual) deadlines are important and try to give you a window in our race, and the whole process of running for Senate.

Tomorrow is the first end-of-quarter deadline since we launched this campaign, and as such it’s one of our first real chances to show what a formidable opponent Team Slotkin is. Friends and competitors alike watch these numbers and make critical decisions for the road ahead.

If you’d like to help us get off to a strong start on this Senate campaign, please consider chipping in $3 below. The sky will NOT fall if you don’t contribute, the country will NOT descend into chaos – but you WILL help us compete in one of the country’s most competitive Senate races!

THANK YOU so much for your support.
