[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Hi there,

Last week, ProPublica reported that for decades, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted — and failed to disclose — millions of dollars worth of gifts and luxury travel from a billionaire Republican mega-donor, including:

- Cruises on his multi-million dollar yacht
- Trips on his private jet
- Attendance at an exclusive (all-male) private retreat in California

Justices are responsible for upholding the law — and they must be held to rigorous and enforceable ethical standards.

Accepting these lavish gifts from a right-wing mega-donor, and failing to disclose them, undermines faith in our judiciary and calls into question the Supreme Court’s ethical standards.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I wrote to Chief Justice Roberts calling on him to immediately open an investigation into how this came to pass and to take all needed action to prevent further misconduct from Supreme Court Justices — including adopting the same code of conduct that every other judicial body in the country is subject to.

So, what comes next?

The Judiciary Committee is going to hold hearings about the need to restore public confidence in the Supreme Court’s ethical standards. And if the Supreme Court doesn’t resolve this issue on their own, we’ll introduce legislation to do so.

Because we can’t afford to have a judicial system where the people at the very top — appointed for life — are not subject to the same ethical rules as the rest of us.

And I want to hear from you. Do you believe that Supreme Court Justices should follow the same Code of Conduct as the rest of the federal judiciary? Do you think there should be a different, even higher standard?

Please take a minute to share your thoughts with me ahead of the upcoming hearings.
