Friend —
Today we wanted to talk about the “myth” of a blue Michigan — the notion that Michigan is now safely in Democratic hands.
Right now in Michigan, Democrats have a slim majority in the Michigan House, Senate and Governor’s office — the trifecta — for the first time in 40 years. But this is brand new, and it reflects a ton of recent change.
You only have to go back five short years to 2018 to see when the state was run top-to-bottom by Republicans — and the state voted for President Trump in 2016.
These dramatic shifts from red to blue reflect the reality that Michiganders are all too familiar with: Michigan is the kind of place where Democrats have to be constantly out-raising, out-organizing, and out-working Republicans to stay ahead. It’s because of that hustle, and a whole lot of strategic planning, that we were able to secure our first Democratic majority in this state in November.
And in the short amount of time that we’ve had this majority we’ve codified abortion rights, protected LGBTQ Michiganders, repealed Right to Work, and the Governor signed a package of gun violence prevention bills into law that will create universal background checks and mandate safe storage requirements around children.
We are taking meaningful action in our state, but all Michiganders know that the minute the Democratic party sleeps on Michigan, it will flip back. Complacency will result in Democrats losing what we’ve worked so hard to achieve in these last five years.
That’s another reason why Elissa’s race is so important. Michigan has been represented in the Senate by two Democrats since 2001 and letting our guard down will all but ensure we will lose this seat to Republicans next year.
