Friend — Today, we wanted to tell you the story of the tale of two Senates.

One Senate is in Washington, DC. There’s gridlock, lots of grandstanding, where little legislation actually gets a vote and a trip to the President’s desk.

The other Senate is in Michigan. It recently came under Democratic control, and they’ve wasted no time putting the majority to good use, using their first few months to pass everything from legislation defending the right to an abortion to protecting our children in classrooms and communities across the state.

Both Senates have the same one-seat majority. The difference between the two Senates is telling and helps us explain what type of leader Elissa will be as the next U.S. Senator from Michigan.

You see, the U.S. Senate in D.C. often finds itself at a stalemate due to the filibuster. The filibuster prevents most legislation from getting a simple “up or down” vote, because you need 60 senators to vote in favor of bringing legislation to the Senate floor for an up or down vote. That 60-senator number means that most legislation coming from the House – including things like voting rights bills, women’s rights bills, and gun safety bills never actually get an up or down vote.

In fact, there are many bipartisan bills that Democrats and Republicans come together on in the House that never even get a vote in the U.S. Senate. We know that many bills might not pass that vote on the floor, but voters should at least be able to know that key issues they care about are getting their shot to pass. They also want Senators to have to put their money where their mouths are and vote on tough issues, instead of simply refusing to let the issue come up.

This is why Elissa believes we must end the filibuster as we know it. Because when it comes to effectively legislating and protecting our democracy, with issues like voting rights, senators should be able to act with urgency and speed. But that won’t happen until we reform the filibuster, and make the U.S. Senate more effective.

In order to see real change in Washington, we need to change the type of leaders who work for us there. Elissa has always worked to break through gridlock and work across the aisle to pass legislation that really benefits people’s lives. And if elected to the U.S. Senate, she will be the youngest Democratic woman in the institution – meaning she will help usher in a new generation of leadership who acts with commitment and urgency to pass legislation, instead of stalling progress to score political points.

That’s why we are working to build a strong grassroots foundation now of folks like you chipping in $5 here and $10 there. Building an early foundation will be critical in shaping what this campaign is capable of down the line, so we mean it when we say it really does all add up.

Will you chip in today to support Elissa’s campaign for Senate in Michigan? Together we can defend this seat and our slim majority in the Senate.
