🌹 Hey friends!
Time for your Raise the Wage Renton Update 🌹

🎉✍️  This week we’re about to hit a major milestone: 8914 unverified signatures for raising the minimum wage in Renton. (We need 8914 verified signatures to get on the ballot.)  🎉✍️

That's $%^ing incredible. It’s thanks to the tireless dedication of DSA volunteers and staff who have gathered the vast majority of all signatures. (For perspective, we gathered ~4000 signatures for I-135.)

BUT. And yes, there’s a big but! We still need a total of 12-14,000 signatures to safely get this minimum wage initiative on the ballot. Because signature validity can range anywhere from 65-80% on a campaign like this, we know we need another 4-5 thousand signatures to make sure we get this done. That’s a lot!

Fortunately, we have some good news on that front. Because the campaign hadn’t started collecting signatures until Jan. 18, we actually have about 15 more days to collect signatures than we thought. That’s good because right now we’re projecting about 11,000 signatures by the July 18th deadline.

❓ ⁉️ So, what does this mean? ❓ ⁉️

  • It means we still need your help to get over the last hurdle.
  • If one person comes down to Renton once per week until July 18th, that’s 50-100 signatures.
  • If you want to come down every other Saturday or Sunday for a longer shift (we have carpools by the way), that’s potentially 100 signatures and you only need to give up 2 days of beach time.

🥇 How can I help? 🥇

I want to just leave you with what gets me out of bed every Saturday for my RTWR shift. I know that winning this will earn somewhere near $45 million/year for working people in Renton -- the single largest material transfer of wealth Seattle DSA will ever have been a part of within the last ten years.

Working people need a raise and they need to see socialists earning it for them together!

All hands on deck!  2,400 UAW 4121 Postdocs and Research Scientists/Engineers are striking for fair contracts at the University of Washington. Throughout the contract bargaining process, UW has engaged in draconian union-busting tactics. What's more it continues to pay many of its workers 30 percent below the national average! All while inflation and rent have skyrocketed.

If you want to join them in their fight and that of workers everywhere, sign up for a picket shift below or if you can’t make it donate $20 today.

UW workers are fighting for:

  1. Support for an inclusive workforce: Postdocs and Research Scientists and Engineers deserve fair agreements that include better support for parents and caregivers; and the same harassment prevention program for RSEs that is available for Postdocs and student employees.

  2. Play by the rules: UW has committed multiple unfair labor practices and has been trying to evade the law establishing fair wages for salaried workers in Washington state. It’s time to bargain in good faith and reach fair agreements.

  3. Fair Compensation: Many UW workers are struggling to make ends meet. According to UW's own study, research scientists and engineers are the furthest behind market wages of any professional staff. Postdocs are also behind as well with the University attempting to weasel its way out Washington's minimum salary laws.
