Last year, President Biden proposed more than $1 trillion in new regulations. Not only is that an extreme sum of money to spend, but the proposals were (somehow) even more extreme. Everything from student loan forgiveness, which is really just a transfer of money from people without a college degree to people with a college degree, to taking away gas stoves and banning oil and gas lease sales, these dollars are not only being spent recklessly, but they are also being used on policies that directly undermine the American people.
We don’t have a monarchy in this country, but with how this president has been using his executive authority, sometimes it feels like we do.
That’s why, this week, House Republicans passed the REINS Act. This bill reasserts the legislative authority of Congress and prevents excessive overreach by the executive branch in the federal rule making process. In short, it’s a way for Congress to make sure that the People have a say in major presidential decisions.
This rule would apply to any executive decisions that costs $100 million or more, leads to a major price hike for consumers, or negatively impacts the American economy. Had this rule been in place back in January 2021, a lot of the harm that this president inflicted on our economy could have been avoided.
There’s a reason why we have a system of checks and balances in this country. It’s because the founders never intended for one person to make decisions for an entire nation; unfortunately, the executive order and rule making powers in the executive branch have been used and abused in this way.
The REINS Act pulls back on that power and puts it back where it belongs – with you, the American people.
