On June 22, 2016, after the tragic shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Florida, I joined with my late, dear friend, Congressman John Lewis to organize our fellow Democrats for a sit-in on the House Floor. For 26 hours, we brought the House to a halt to demand action on gun violence, even after then-Speaker Paul Ryan ordered cameras be cut.

Just last week, I was honored to welcome President Biden as he visited Hartford to discuss how important it is we address the tragedies of gun violence in our nation. For the past four years, we have had more mass shootings than days in the year. Assault weapons have become the weapons of choice, ending lives and tearing communities apart. Ghost gun kits can allow individuals to assemble untraceable firearms without registering or going through a background check, making them an attractive way for people who would otherwise be unable to acquire a firearm to do so. While the Biden Administration has taken first steps to address the proliferation of ghost guns, more action is needed.

Today, I introduced legislation to prohibit the use of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) for assault weapons and assault weapon ghost gun kits. We know that many mass shooters use credit to finance their weapons of war and destruction. Banning use of instant financing like BNPL options for assault weapons and the ghost gun kits used to build them will take a step towards reducing the instant accessibility of these weapons and preventing tragedies before they occur.
