Metro DC DSA Weekly Update for Friday, February 14, 2020

** What's On This Week
------------------------------------------------------------
Comrade,

VALENTINE’S DAY? Yeah, well, St. Valentine didn’t exactly enjoy his transfiguration -- martyrdom in the Roman 3rd Century C.E. -- but as socialists, whether we are lookin’ for love or not, our goal is justice -- which, as Dr. West has said, is what love looks like in public. So happy Valentine’s Day, comrades, as we pursue that revolution, and let’s build our tools for power by refreshing ourselves on last Sunday’s GBM on labor activism as it is configured today. Here is the excellent slide deck that accompanied our Labor WG hosts Caleb and Sam … [link removed]

THE WEEKEND

Sat Feb 15: DSA for Bernie VA Canvass (Meet at 12:30pm at East Falls Church Station): ([link removed])

Let’s keep the momentum going! Bernie needs YOU to join our energized group of supporters this Saturday. We’re knocking on doors in the communities surrounding the East Falls Church Metro Station. We cut a lot of turf so we’re counting on our team to show up. Bring your friends and family! Only 3 weekends left before Virginia votes on Super Tuesday on March 3rd.

Feb 8 Canvass: MDC DSA 4 BERNIE **SMASHES** 5K DOOR-KNOCK GOAL! RAISES THE BAR TO 15K!

Last Saturday, over 80 (!) comrades with the MDC DSA 4 Bernie group knocked almost 4,000 (!!) doors in the Alexandria, VA communities around King Street Station. Afterward we partied on the first and second floor of a nearby bar and caught up with regular canvassers and made tons of new friends.

We have now knocked nearly 9,300 (!!!) total doors for Bernie in Metro DC--join us THIS Saturday ([link removed]) at East Falls Church Metro Station at 12:30pm for what may be the biggest canvass yet! Details linked above and listed below. Help be a part of the effort to reach our new goal of 15k doors!

Over 110 people came through Penn Social to join fellow comrades in rooting for Bernie Sanders on election night. Bernie took the lead immediately and was declared the winner around 11pm at night. There was tons of cheering, a minor amount of booing for non-Bernie individuals, and we all made new friends.

Federal housing projects within the city - which house up to approximately 20,000 people, are derelict and untenable. The city will begin inviting private developers to renovate or buy properties as a means to curate financing for maintenance. Crucially, as repairs are made, many of these low-income workers will be required to leave their homes.

A review of the Democratic Party’s failure to deliver Iowa Caucus results with confidence. There is little evidence of direct influence or tampering, but the debacle shows how imposing new processes into long-established processes can backfire in surprising ways. Gathering localized context is imperative for implementing new processes into political activities to ensure veracity.
