** NEW 5 Gyres Published Research
------------------------------------------------------------
Our 10+ years of research on ocean and terrestrial plastics leads us to focus on understanding specific sources, or sectors, that generate plastic pollution, in order to create more effective solutions. There are many unique sources of plastic pollution — such as microfibers from textiles ([link removed]) , microplastics from agricultural practices, floating ocean plastics ([link removed]) from fishing gear, and everyday single-use packaging — and solutions for each of these require specific designs, policy approaches, and innovation.
Sector-Based Framework to Address the Plastic Pollution Crisis

Plastic is complex: there are varied polymers, additives, design, and impacts. 5 Gyres outlines a framework to better solve for plastic pollution by framing strategies and solutions around specific sectors of plastic use in society.
Threatened Seabirds Visit Remote Plastic Pollution Hotspots

Tracking data for more than 7,000 petrels of 77 species reveals where threatened seabirds risk exposure to marine plastic pollution, finding that 25% of plastic exposure occurs on the high seas where it accumulates in oceanic gyres.
Adding Plastic Waste to Building Materials Might Not be a Good Idea
[link removed]
It's increasingly common to incorporate plastic waste into building materials, like roads, concrete, and turf. While some believe this to be a reasonable end-of-life scenario for plastic waste, research shows it may cause more problems.
