Friend – Monday, as you know, we had an important win to maintain abortion rights in Iowa for now. Governor Reynolds tried for a second time to push through a horrific 6-week abortion ban in Iowa, and once again, the court blocked it while the case proceeds. Just hours after Reynolds signed the law last Friday, we filed a lawsuit on behalf of Planned Parenthood and the Emma Goldman Clinic. For part of that Friday and part of Monday, most abortions in Iowa were banned. But then the court issued a temporary injunction, and abortion in Iowa is once again legal up until 22 weeks. It was the latest in the roller coaster of reproductive rights in Iowa as anti-choice politicians once again try to stop essentially all abortions in Iowa and pro-choice advocates work to preserve abortion rights. As of the sending of this email, the next swoops in the roller coaster are undetermined. If Governor Reynolds and the Board of Medicine appeal, we'll be ready for the upcoming legal battle. In this difficult post-Roe v. Wade world, we are absolutely committed to doing everything in our power – legally, legislatively, and with advocacy – to ensure that Iowa women maintain control of their bodies, reproductive freedom, and in some cases, life-saving medical care. Thank you for all you've done to help and support. This is what democracy looks like. With appreciation, Mark Stringer |
