# [#] [link removed] [[link removed]]Today is the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 , marking 58 years since the signing of one of the most important pieces of legislation in our nation’s history.
Our country stands on the shoulders of those who fought courageously to ensure all Americans have the right to vote, heroes like my dear friend the late John Lewis.
But let’s be clear, John: That sacred right — the most fundamental tool of our democracy — is under attack from the extreme right and an ultra-conservative Supreme Court.

This fight is nothing new, and we know the playbook. The Supreme Court has repeatedly attacked voting rights and the integrity of elections, including more than a decade ago with Citizens United v. FEC . That’s when the Democratic Caucus founded the Task Force on Election Reform — and I joined as its very first Chairman.
Since then, we’ve re-doubled our efforts to protect the right to vote, but Republicans are still winning this battle. We’ve seen attacks on our right to vote increase tenfold: voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and rolling back anti-discrimination protections within the Voting Rights Act itself.
We owe it to ourselves and the next generation of voters to keep fighting for a democracy where every American has the right to vote and fair representation.
Let me know you stand with me. Sign my petition calling on Congress to protect our sacred right to vote>>> [[link removed]]
