Friend,
We wanted to make sure you saw this headline from the Detroit Free Press confirming what this team has always known: Despite people believing that Michigan is a “Democratic stronghold”, it’s a swing state that can flip red under the right conditions.
With a presidential election on the ballot as well, this election cycle is especially susceptible to that pendulum: The public polling released so far shows that not only is our race currently neck-and-neck with 14% of voters undecided, but a potential match-up between President Biden and former President Trump is a tie.
It was only seven years ago that Michigan was red from top to bottom — we voted for Trump, and we had a Republican Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Legislature, and congressional delegation. Through hard work and strategic planning, we have flipped all of those leaders and have Democratic majorities in the State Legislature.
But in order to defend this open Senate seat and preserve the Democrats’ progress in the state, we have to keep up that work. Good intentions are fine. Having a plan is much, much more critical.
That’s why we've been doing everything we can to take our message directly to voters early by visiting towns all over Michigan and meeting with folks to talk about the issues that matter to them. We are also making early data-informed decisions about our outreach — when we go up with TV and digital ads, when we hire staff, and how we build a ground-game that meets folks where they are.
