Award-Winning Staff & Students Changing the Game through Education The Virginia Housing Alliance awarded Milenka Coronel Samey, Assistant Director of Resident Services at AHC, a Game Changer Award at the 2023 Annual Awards Luncheon! The award recognizes innovators in the affordable housing space. Milenka’s incredible work creating and curating AHC’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) program earned her the accolade. AHC's Extraordinary Teen Arlington Magazine awarded Ribka Desta, AHC College and Career Readiness (CCR) program alum and Afterschool program volunteer, an Extraordinary Teen Award! Her passion for poetry, education, and volunteering made her an excellent candidate for the award. Read Full Story Affordable Homes and Access to Healthcare Health & Wellness is a crucial tenet of AHC’s Resident Services. An exciting partnership to enhance residents’ well-being is coming soon to Charter House, an AHC community in Silver Spring, Maryland. AHC and the Affordable Healthcare Nurse Practitioner Clinic have partnered to provide outpatient care to Charter House residents. Patients can seek care in their own homes or Charter House's community spaces. Charter House is a 55+ community, with 75% of its apartments reserved for income-qualified residents. The partnership with Affordable Healthcare Nurse Practitioner Clinic will supplement the existing care residents receive from medical professionals on their own. Services will include treatment and management of chronic illnesses; visits for common illnesses and infections; physical examinations; and more. Stay tuned for more information on this dynamic partnership. National Night of Fun On August 1, AHC's affordable housing communities celebrated National Night Out, an annual campaign to help build community among neighbors. Residents enjoyed food and fun activities. Community partners, local politicians, and Arlington County police officers came to meet residents. At one of our communities, Resident Services organized a game of Mexican bingo, complete with prizes. Other communities had painting, snow cones, and more. Check out some fun photos from the events! AHC in Action Free English Classes At the Serrano community center, residents and community members can take free English classes thanks to a partnership with the Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP). People can drop in at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to join the class. Register in person, or pre-register here. Beating the Heat in Maryland Residents at MonteVerde cooled off from the August heat with ice cream provided by Medicare partner Shedrick Elliott. We are so grateful for our generous partners! Emergency Preparedness Training In July, residents from Serrano and Arbor Heights participated in an emergency preparedness training led by the Arlington County Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management. Thanks to all who made the training possible. It provided valuable information to AHC’s residents. AHC Delves into DEIB AHC senior leadership and managers recently completed a seven-session learning cohort focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).  Now the work continues by building equity into AHC’s practices and policies. Areas of focus include hiring, retention, and staff development; expanding trauma-informed practices and mental health supports; and ensuring a welcoming and inclusive staff environment that connects to AHC’s mission. Celebrating Summer Camp On August 17, kids from AHC's communities met at the park for Field Day to celebrate the end of summer camp! Partners, volunteers, and staff filled the day with food, sports, and fun on the playground. Throughout the summer, community partners donated time, money, and supplies to make camp a success. A big thank you to Harkins Builders, Potomac School, Otto, Arlington Rotary Club, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Educational Theatre Company, Arlington Library, Arlington County Fire Department, Arlington County Police Department, Encore Stage & Studio, B Riley Securities, Holy Trinity Church, Paradigm, and 2nd Order Solutions. Get Involved! Make a Difference in the Life of a Child At AHC, we believe HOUSING + EDUCATION = SUCCESS. We are looking for volunteers to help as teen tutors and reading buddies once a week during the 2023-24 school year. Volunteering will be in person in Arlington, VA.
