This month, the world saw the consequences of climate change right here in Alaska, friend. The Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau is melting, and a recent outburst sent torrents of water rushing downstream through our state capital.
As our climate warms, glaciers are receding, and the natural dams they’ve formed for millennia are failing — causing catastrophic flooding downstream.
As we’ve said before, Alaska is ground zero for climate change. We are already feeling its drastic effects. Our plan for dealing with our new reality is twofold:
First, we must work to stem the future harms of climate change. This means listening to science, embracing sustainable technologies, and finding ways to protect our natural resources.
Second, we must ensure that we’re prepared for the inevitable impacts that cannot be stopped. We need to invest in Alaska’s infrastructure so that we will be prepared as the landscape continues to shift around us.
Climate change is already here, folks. Build Alaska’s Future Action Fund is focused on preventing the worst impacts of our warming climate while ensuring Alaska is prepared for the impacts we can’t head off.
