Friend —
This week, amid the hubbub of the first GOP debate, you may have missed a theme beneath the big headlines: eight Republicans stood on stage and made it clear that if any one of them is in the White House, the right to choose will be under attack – and 7 out of 8 spoke up to support a federal ban on abortion.
To be clear on what a federal ban would do: a federal ban would come via a bill in the Republican-held House and Senate that would supersede any and all state laws passed to allow for abortion. That would mean National Republicans would decide what a woman can and cannot do in a place like Michigan, even though we passed a constitutional amendment to codify Roe in our state.
After the striking down of Roe a year ago, and the non-stop legal cases and bills to further curb access in the states, we have to believe what National Republicans are telling us: It was never just about Roe.
If this Republican party is allowed to take the White House and the Senate, they *will* move to try to ban abortion at the federal level. And they won’t let voters get in their way.
We’ve already seen the these attacks take shape in GOP-held Congress: Right now, Republicans are working to insert language into our federal budget that would ban people from getting the abortion-inducing drug mifepristone – which can be used up to 10 weeks after conception — through the mail rather than via in-person visits to providers.
This is on top of going after women who serve in the US military by GOP-controlled bills, and Senator Tommy Tuberville holding up 300+ generals and admirals’ confirmation until women in uniform are banned from traveling to another state for an abortion.
These constant attacks make it very clear that National Republicans will not stop until there is a full federal ban on abortion for every woman in America.
We’ll be frank: Our best line of defense against these attacks on reproductive healthcare at the federal level is to ensure Democrats maintain control of the White House and the Senate — and to elect Senators who will vote to end the filibuster as we know it so we can codify Roe into federal law, as we’ve done in the House.
