Can we tell you a quick story about Rule #1 for Elissa Slotkin in her political campaigns?

Here it goes: When Elissa first decided to run for public office, she had never been to a political fundraiser. Ever.

Hard to believe for a current member of Congress, but as a former national security person, she had never attended a political event.

But what Elissa knew when she got started is that one of the reasons so many Americans have lost trust in government is the role money plays in the political process.

That's how Rule #1 was born: Elissa does not accept corporate PAC money. She never wanted her constituents to question why she was voting a certain way, or have any doubt that she was fighting for their interests.

For many in Washington, this is seen as a disadvantage – especially since Senate campaigns are notoriously expensive.

But for Elissa, this is a matter of protecting our democracy. When you take a donation from a for-profit company, it makes average citizens question who you are voting on behalf of.

But this means we are counting on lots and lots of people to contribute what they can, when they can, to power this campaign. Grassroots donations, as we’ve seen so clearly over the last few years, can exceed the tens of thousands we’d otherwise get from for-profit companies.
