** Alcohol duty changes “will save lives”
------------------------------------------------------------
The biggest alcohol duty reforms in 140 years came into effect from 1 August. The new system simplifies the previous duty structure and broadly taxes alcoholic products more the stronger they get. Different rates will apply to products between 3.5% ABV and 8.4% ABV. The changes will help to reduce alcohol harm and save lives, by discouraging the production of cheap, high-strength products which are primarily consumed by heavy and vulnerable drinkers.

** Reducing alcohol harm “must be a priority for all”

Alcohol Change UK has welcomed the inclusion of alcohol as a key risk factor and determinant of health in the Department for Health and Social Care’s newly published interim report for its Major Conditions Strategy. But states that alcohol needs to be tackled more holistically through a comprehensive alcohol strategy if health outcomes are to be improved.

** Even low levels of alcohol “associated with increases in blood pressure”
------------------------------------------------------------
Routine alcohol consumption, even in small amounts, has been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, according to a new study. Senior investigator Marco Vinceti said that whilst alcohol is not the sole driver of increases in blood pressure, the study’s findings show it can be a meaningful contributor and that, consequently, “limiting alcohol intake is advised, and avoiding it is even better”.
