Happy Labor Day, John!
As you spend time with family and friends this holiday, I hope you also find the time to celebrate the history of labor movements in Philadelphia and nationwide.
Philly has long been a proud union town. Fun fact: The first-ever general strike in North America occurred right here in Philadelphia. 188 years ago, at least 20,000 workers went on strike — demanding better wages and a ten-hour workday. Their efforts were successful and laid the foundation for the American labor movement.
For generations and generations, hardworking men and women of organized labor have put their livelihoods on the line for progress. We can thank those heroes for the minimum wage, 40-hour workweek, benefits, safety standards, child labor laws, and the creation of the middle class!
John: As we continue building power today, we must learn from the past. I'm determined to continue the work of those who came before us, and I will keep fighting to deliver working Americans the rights, protections, and respect they deserve.
In solidarity,
Dwight
