It’s been an exciting summer here on Team Slotkin, so we wanted to give you the rundown on all of the things that have happened, people we met, and places we visited since our last newsletter→

Endorsements from local leaders and elected officials

In August, former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced that he’s endorsing Elissa in the US Senate race! He knows that there is no better leader for Detroit and all of Michigan than Elissa. He was joined by local Detroit leaders including Saunteel Jenkins, former President of the Detroit City Council, Charity Dean, President and CEO of the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance, Diane Bostic Robinson, former President of the Historic Boston-Edison Association, Dr. Iris A. Taylor, Former President and CEO of Detroit Medical Receiving Hospital, Monique Marks, President and CEO of Franklin Wright Settlements, and Dr. Theresa Saunders, former Superintendent of Highland Park City Schools.

Unions & Organizations

In addition to the 15 unions who endorsed us earlier in the summer, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights announced their endorsement of our campaign at their statewide conference in Bellaire — with some very on-point signs.

We also picked up an endorsement from the American Federation of Government Employees District 7, which represents over 73,000 current and retired federal employees in Michigan – including people who care for veterans, support our military, and ensure social security recipients get their benefits. In addition, the Progressive Women’s Alliance of West Michigan announced their support!

This latest round of organizations and leaders join a growing list of support that includes EMILY’s List, End Citizens United/Let America Vote, Giffords PAC, VoteVets, Foreign Policy for America, 16 major labor unions, and more than 100 local leaders across the state.

Events

Over the last month, Elissa attended events in Ottawa, Charlevoix, Otsego, Kent, Muskegon, Grand Traverse County, Marquette, Mackinac, Oakland, and regular events in Wayne County. In Detroit, Elissa spoke at the Labor Day Parade – which was the first time the parade was held after a three-year hiatus due to COVID. The event served as an important reminder, especially on the eve of the big UAW contract expiring soon, that Labor is having a moment right now.

Elissa also met with local leaders across Wayne County and received a tour of the new HYPE Athletic Center in Dearborn. She had the opportunity to sit down with a group of minority business owners at Activate Detroit, where she participated in a discussion about the issues affecting people in the community — including affordable housing, health care, and equity.

Earlier this month, she joined Matrix Human Services, Detroit’s largest Head Start program, to hear directly from the educators about what they need to help children and families thrive.

On the West Side of the state, Elissa joined the Kent County Dems, met with the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and joined more than 200 voters to discuss what issues really matter to them in this election. She also joined an event by Berrien Forward in Benton Harbor to discuss voting rights, gun violence, and why Berrien County is fired up about 2024.

At the beginning of August, Elissa joined the Coast Guard parade, in which over 100,000 people lined the streets to show support for the servicemembers who play a critical role around the Great Lakes.

Elissa also made her way up north where she visited with voters in Marquette before attending the UP State Fair in Escanaba – which had countless activities and the chance to meet so many amazing Yoopers. Elissa got to speak on behalf of the UP Veteran of the Year, Jim Provost, a true man of character. Then she held a meet and greet in Hessel.

Since the start of this campaign, we have hit the ground running: visiting 25 counties, attending over 100 events, and meeting with countless Michiganders. Leadership is about showing up and fighting on behalf of your constituents. We’re committed to listening to Michiganders in every corner of the state. And we’ll continue to do just that.

Key race updates

While we were taking Elissa’s message to every corner of Michigan, we also got some big news in our race: Former Congressman Mike Rogers officially announced his candidacy to be the Republican nominee in the Michigan Senate race. While there are still other candidates who might jump in the race, this announcement sets up a competitive and expensive election for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. Recent polling has shown that the Presidential and Senate races are both statistical dead-heats, which means we’ll have two close races to win in Michigan next year.

But, as always, we have a plan and we’re going to make sure Michiganders know exactly who Mike Rogers is: He was on the Trump national security transition team, and was in talks to be Trump’s Director of FBI, but then got fired. Then he became a critic of Trump, and now he’s doing backflips to appeal to the MAGA base.

Regardless of his record on Trump, he's a true conservative. He supports extreme abortion bans with no exceptions for rape, incest, or common miscarriage; he voted to cut Social Security and Medicare; and, with an A rating from the NRA, he voted to *expand* access to guns. He represented a version of Elissa's current congressional district, 4 years before she flipped it — but with a different set of values.

We always knew this race would be tough, but we’re staying the course – reaching people where they are and taking Elissa’s message to voters across the state. Defending an open Senate seat in a swing state won’t be easy, but nothing worth doing ever is.
