Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

This month, the 5 Gyres team is getting out into the field (or the park, or the ocean), to support science that drives solutions.

We're setting sail in the San Francisco Bay ([link removed]) with Materevolve and an intimate group of microfiber researchers, sustainable brands, and innovators, to conduct scientific research and foster open discussion about potential microfiber solutions.

Simultaneously, our team will be at Yosemite National Park, with our partners from Epson, Liquid Death, and Klean Kanteen, to collect data for our Plastic-Free Parks TrashBlitz ([link removed]) project. We're joining hundreds of volunteers at the 20th annual Yosemite Facelift ([link removed]) event to take the clean-up one step further by categorizing waste and developing targeted solutions.

An Update from Sacramento

Last week, we were in Sacramento advocating for our microfiber filtration bill, AB 1628 (McKinnor). California can lead the nation in taking a science-based approach to tackle microplastic pollution, and washing machine filters are a proven solution. The bill made it off the CA Senate floor, but we need your help ([link removed]) getting it to the Governor's desk!

* In our latest published research ([link removed]) , we make the case that clean-up technologies need to be regulated and addressed in the global plastics treaty.

* The Reducing Waste in National Parks Act ([link removed]) was introduced in the U.S. Senate! This bill would ban the sale & distribution of single-use plastics across all parks, including common items found during our Plastic-Free Parks project last year ([link removed]) .

* The UN Environment Programme released a zero draft of the global plastics treaty, and noticeably absent are sectors ([link removed]) . The text addresses fishing gear and single-use plastics, but what about car tires, textiles ([link removed]) , agricultural waste, or the many other sectors of plastic use in society?
