It has been 22 days since we’ve had a Speaker of the House. In just a little bit, House Republicans will nominate Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana to serve as the next Speaker – he is their fourth nominee since McCarthy was ousted 3 weeks ago, and second nominee in just the last 24 hours, after Donald Trump helped tank Tom Emmer’s chances of being Speaker yesterday.

Behind the scenes, Mike Johnson is being described as Jim Jordan without the scandals and attention. He’s every bit as conservative, but has largely flown under the radar in the House. Mike Johnson is Trump’s second choice for Speaker, after Jim Jordan’s failed efforts to take control of the gavel — which is why he may just succeed in the vote later today.

Johnson’s record gives us a window into what we can expect should he become Speaker: Johnson led efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and joined the efforts to overturn Michigan’s 2020 Presidential results – siding decidedly with Donald Trump over Michigan voters. He voted against legislation supporting gay marriage, twice. He voted against the PACT Act, bipartisan legislation to expand health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and toxic substances.

But above all that, Mike Johnson has been a lead champion for a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or common miscarriage — even as more moderate republicans have tried to edge away from their lifelong support for bans in the face of the new political consequences. Johnson, who has his own podcast, has continued to be a vehement believer in a nationwide abortion ban, and has stated publicly that he supports *imprisoning women* for getting an abortion.

As the Republican Party continues down a path of extremism — and prepares for another year of extreme, culture-war legislation more extreme than what Kevin McCarthy put forward to the floor — it’s never been more clear that Democrats need to take back the House and maintain control of the White House and Senate. The only way that happens is by electing principled leaders like Elissa who will push back against extremism in Washington. Will you join us in that effort by chipping in today?
