House Republicans got out of their own way yesterday to – finally – elect a new speaker of the House. Here's what you need to know about Mike Johnson—the new GOP leader:

-- Mike Johnson helped try and overturn the 2020 election. He urged Donald Trump to "Stay strong and keep fighting, sir!"

-- He's a major Trump ally. He served on Trump's defense team during both of his impeachment trials.

-- Johnson led budget resolutions to try and cut social safety nets: about $2 trillion from Medicare, $3 trillion from Medicaid & the Affordable Care Act, and $750 billion from Social Security.

-- He strongly opposes abortion. Johnson celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade, calling it "a great, joyous occasion."

-- Johnson is also a proud supporter of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that suppresses speech and access to gender-affirming care.

The list goes on. Johnson's election is further proof that the GOP is willing to embrace extremism, attack democracy, and go against the will of the American people if it means staying in power.
