October 2023 MOVING FORWARD AHC Reaffirms Commitment Through New Mission, Vision, & Values Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) revealed its new mission, vision, values, beliefs, and strategic plan at the 2023 Annual Celebration on October 19, reaffirming its commitment to building equitable communities by putting residents at the heart of its work. “We viewed the process as an opportunity to reset, renew, and set forth a vision for impact in our communities,” said Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO. “Our new mission, vision, and values, along with the recent rebranding, build on AHC's past successes while taking a big step forward in our evolution.” Read More   AHC staff in Baltimore and Arlington celebrated the rebrand by wearing our new colors and posing with the logo. CELEBRATING CULTURE Hispanic Heritage Month at AHC AHC communities celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in a variety of ways. At one community, students in the Afterschool program read a book about a family making tamales and made papel picado to decorate their classroom. One AHC community celebrated with coffee and traditional Mexican sweet bread. Resident Services put on the "Cafe con conchas" event and chatted with residents about the cultural tradition of having sweet conchas with coffee for breakfast. Kids in the Afterschool program at that community celebrated by creating a mural featuring cultural leaders Selena Quintanilla, Sonia Sotomayor, Cesar Chavez, and more. They put the mural up near the community room for other residents to see. Hispanic Heritage Month may be over, but we look forward to continuing to celebrate all year! REAL ESTATE RECAP Lansdowne Gardens Community Receives $10 Million to Help Fund Green Renovations Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is receiving a $10 million award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The funding is part of HUD’s Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, and it allows AHC to expand the planned renovation work at Lansdowne Gardens apartments and substantially improve energy and water efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and move the community to net-zero energy and emissions. “This important funding significantly augments our existing renovation plans and helps us directly improve the lives of our residents,” said AHC President & CEO Paul Bernard. “We’ll be able to lower costs to residents, expand renewable energy generation and storage at the community, and reduce exposure to health risks associated with natural gas.” Read More Now Leasing at The Westerly Waterfront Station II is now named The Westerly. This time last year, the mixed-income building was under construction. Now, we have started the leasing process! The 11-story project is a joint venture of AHC, Hoffman & Associates, CityPartners, and Paramount, and it includes an onsite childcare, performance space, and retail. One-third of the homes are deeply affordable. Touring Randolph Road  Montgomery County Department of General Services and AHC staff toured the Randolph Road construction site with Harkins Builders. It was great to see the site's progress with our partners. NEWS NUGGETS Helping Residents Stay Healthy Health & Wellness is a key tenet of our award-winning Resident Services. At MonteVerde, a community in Baltimore for seniors and non-elderly residents with a disability, Resident Services held a COVID vaccine clinic for residents. Thank you to everyone who makes this intentional work possible. Ready, Set, Go! Heart & Sole, the 6th-8th grade Girls on the Run program, is going strong at our communities. The program focuses on five key areas: body, brain, heart, spirit, and connection with others. We're happy to help our teens grow in many ways. Computer Literacy Awards Residents from MonteVerde celebrated their successful completion of computer literacy classes taught by fellow resident, Norman Brown. Participants from the Beginner, Intermediate, and Intro to Mousing computer classes received certificates of achievement. Adventures in Nature Kids in our Afterschool program spend time in nature during the Outdoor Explorer Club. The six-week club runs during the spring and fall at our communities. Teacher and volunteer Alison Sheahan coordinates the clubs with volunteers from Arlington Regional Master Naturalists. Thank you to everyone who brings adventure in the outdoors to our residents.
