We got some sobering news in Michigan, Michael: Yesterday, the nonpartisan political forecasters at the Cook Political Report downgraded from Lean Democrat to a pure TOSS UP for the 2024 election.
Why is this important? Well, it confirms something Michiganders know, which is that Michigan is NOT a solidly blue state. Despite the amazing success Democrats have had up and down the ticket the last few years, Michigan is a pendulum that constantly swings back and forth under the right conditions (just think back to 2016 when Donald Trump won Michigan by 10,704 votes.)
This means that the second people sleep on Michigan based on previous successes, Democrats lose the state. We need to be doing everything we can right now to set us up for success on Election Day so we can protect the White House and defend the Senate.
National Republicans, meanwhile, also view Michigan as a key battleground state for both the presidential race and the senate, which is why we’ve already seen two visits from Trump this year and why we can expect to see even more in the coming months. In addition, we know that millions of dollars from conservative megadonors and Super PACs are on the way to prop up our eventual opponent – setting up a battle royale here in Michigan, with control of both the White House and the Senate on the line.
That’s why we’re focused on ensuring our campaign has the resources necessary to fight back against the attack ads and outside spending that are quickly coming our way. And it’s why we say that the most important time to donate is early – before 2024 kicks off in earnest. Early support helps us be strategic and intentional about how we’re reaching voters. And in a race that will be as competitive as ours, we need to allocate our resources as efficiently as possible.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the path to keeping the White House blue and protecting the Senate majority runs through Michigan, and your early support will help us build the kind of campaign we need to win in 2024. Your support before December 31st would be a huge help.
