And practically a unicorn in politics these days… John, I served in the U.S. Navy, and during my time in the service I studied meteorology and oceanography, which is vital for guiding ships and flights to safety. Equally important was our role in anti-submarine warfare, a critical aspect of national defense. When I decided to run for Congress so that my region of Appalachian Ohio could have the representation it sorely needs and very much deserves, I immediately realized how outnumbered folks like me are in politics: As a veteran, I joined a small circle of people from both parties that have ever run for Congress or been elected. There are currently only about 82 members of Congress with military experience, and that share has fallen to a record low. And as a person with an extensive background in science, I would be in an even smaller club in Congress. Scientists, including physicians and experts in medical sciences, are even rarer in politics and serving in the halls of Congress than veterans and active duty servicemembers. The point is, those who don’t come from the legal profession, business, or finance start out at a disadvantage in fundraising. But as more individuals get involved in supporting worthwhile campaigns and rolling up their sleeves to work for and donate to candidates they believe in, the playing field gets leveled.
