This week, I joined House Speaker Mike Johnson and more than 60 of my House Republican colleagues at the Southern Border in Eagle Pass, Texas to witness firsthand the catastrophe and humanitarian crisis unfolding there. The situation I saw was worse than anticipated.  

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) encountered more than 300,000 migrants at the Southern Border with as many as 12,000 daily crossings in December alone.

Other Important Border Facts:

• Encounters at the Southwest border in FY2023 increased over 40% since FY2021, 4% compared to FY2022, and more than 100% compared to FY2019.
• Since President Biden took office, there have been 7.5 million encounters nationwide and 6.2 million encounters at the Southwest border, in addition to 1.7 million known "gotaways."  
• In FY2023, 169 individuals whose names appear on the terrorist watchlist were stopped as they tried to cross the U.S.-Mexico border between ports of entry.
• In FY2023, CBP, including Air and Marine Operations, has seized 27,293 pounds of fentanyl coming across the Southwest border.

After being briefed by CBP at the Southern Border, it is clear to me that this Administration has allowed dangerous terrorists, human traffickers, and cartels to freely enter our country through their wide-open Southern Border policies. Yet even as the GOP headed to the Southern Border to stop illegal immigration, President Biden sent his lawyers to court to help illegal immigration. In fact, the Biden Administration asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to allow border patrol agents in Texas to remove the razor wire Texas installed to prevent illegal border crossings. 

This proves that the federal government under the Biden Administration is a complete and dangerous failure at the Southern Border.

House Republicans Passed Legislation to Address the Crisis at the Southern Border

In May of last year, House Republicans passed H.R. 2; the Secure the Border Act, the strongest border security measure to be introduced in the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats have refused to even consider bringing this vital piece of legislation to the Senate Floor for a vote. For the sake of the American people, I urge the Senate to take up this bill and pass it.

The time to stand by and do nothing is over. It is time for Congress to tackle our broken Southern Border and hold the open-border Democrats accountable for violating the law.

We must secure our border!
