On the January 6th Anniversary
|
Three years ago, men and women of the United States attacked our Capitol Building with the full intent to alter the outcome of our 2020 presidential election and harm those who stood in their way. I’m writing to ask that we never normalize that. Ever, again. It was ugly. It was disturbing. It was violent. But most of all it was deliberate.
Three years later, our country remains splintered and divided.
We need to find common ground again, common ground in what happened on January 6th and the subsequent events. We need to be sure it won’t ever happen again. And we must hold those responsible for January 6th accountable for their attack on our most hallowed principles.
We have seen firsthand the consequences of January 6th here in Pennsylvania with attempts to overthrow mail-in balloting and legislative power grabs through constitutional amendments. Similarly, throughout the nation, states have passed laws to limit voting access in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Instead of guaranteeing that every qualified voter gets to vote, some states are suggesting that they shouldn’t have that opportunity. That’s not what my grandparents believed. That’s not what my uncle Ed thought when he marched with the U.S. Army into Berlin, and it’s not what I believe.
The basic point of American political dignity is the sanctity of your right to vote, to make your voice heard, to participate in choosing our elected leaders. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
