Hey team,
Now that we are firmly in the election year, we wanted to give you a rundown on what’s happening on the other side of this race. Right now, there are four credible candidates, all duking it out ahead of the August primary here in Michigan: former Congressman Mike Rogers, former Congressman Peter Meijer, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, and wealthy businessman Sandy Pensler. And if there’s one rule of political gravity in Republican primaries these days, it’s that they become a race to the Trumpiest, and that’s certainly true here in Michigan.
So here’s the rundown on our opponents record on Trump:
Mike Rogers: Rogers was a leader of Trump’s Presidential transition team but abruptly fired. He then spent almost a decade criticizing Donald Trump, even as a paid commentator for CNN. He’s been quoted as saying it’s “time to move on [from Trump],” criticizing his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and eviscerating Trump’s national security record. He’s referred to Trump as a “gangster”, and for the early part of 2023, explored running against Trump in the GOP primary. Rogers then entered the Senate race, and started reading the political tea leaves: he released a video attacking his former colleagues at the FBI for doing their jobs, and then last week Rogers formally endorsed Trump for President in an op-ed, echoing MAGA language and talking points.
Peter Meijer: Meijer called Trump “unfit for office” when he famously voted to impeach Donald Trump in 2021 for his role in the January 6th insurrection and his attempt to overturn the election. As a consequence, he lost his primary election and his seat in Congress. In late 2023, with a Senate bid on the line, Meijer flipped and said he’d support Trump for President – selling out his values in the hopes of winning a Senate seat.
James Craig: Craig endorsed Trump way back in September and is positioning himself as the strongest Trump ally in the race. He’s made almost no public appearances in his campaign, but has instead been a regular guest on Steve Bannon’s podcast and other far-right shows as he tries to curry Trump’s favor. He’s quick to criticize Rogers and Meijer for their previous lack of support for Trump.
Sandy Pensler: Pensler entered this race with a video that included a heavy dose of far-right messaging that was a clear signal to Trump that he is willing to fall in line. This is in contrast to 2018, when he said Trump spoke at a “fourth-grade level.”
What do all of these opponents have in common? They are all willing to say and do anything to get elected – even if it is obviously hypocritical. At the end of the day, it shows each of their characters.
But while they sprint to the far right to try to win Trump’s endorsement, we’re focused on a different audience—everyday Michigan voters. We’ve got a lot of work to do to make sure all four Republicans are held accountable to their extremist records, and introduce Elissa to all 10 million people in Michigan.
That’s why we’re asking: Will you chip in to help us send a reasonable, level-headed leader like Elissa to the Senate and keep Michigan blue in November
