Big news, team: One of our potential Republican opponents, businessman Sandy Pensler, just aired his first TV ad of the election.
Here’s why that matters, especially so early on in this race: Pensler is a wealthy venture capitalist with nearly unlimited personal cash to spend. He self-funded $5 million dollars in a failed bid for the Republican nomination for Senate in 2018, which he narrowly lost to John James, and could very well spend just as much—or more—in 2024.
Now, money alone can’t buy the GOP nomination, but it can buy name recognition. Public polling shows that Michiganders don’t know any of the main candidates for Senate. Just 45% of Michiganders have heard of Elissa, and she’s easily got the highest name recognition.
Once people have an idea about who a politician is, it can be hard to change their minds. A lot of voters will form opinions over the next several months, which is why this moment is crucial for introducing voters not only to Elissa, but also to all four of our Republican opponents as well.
With candidates like Pensler threatening to blanket the airwaves, it’s important that our team has the resources to tell the truth not just about Pensler’s extremism, but about the radical right-wing views of every candidate in the Republican field.
Some of our opponents can count on an influx of cash, but Elissa has pledged from the very first day that she ran for office that she wouldn’t accept money from corporate PACs, and that’s never changing.
