Today should mark 51 years since the protections of Roe v. Wade took effect.

Instead, because of the Dobbs decision in June 2022, millions of American women have fewer rights now than their mothers & grandmothers had.

Since the fall of Roe at the federal level, the issue of abortion has been left to the states. Here in Michigan, voters overwhelmingly voted for a ballot initiative in 2022 that codified the Roe standard into our state Constitution, and repealed a 1931 ban that made it a felony to administer most abortions, including for rape or incest. And Governor Whitmer signed an executive directive further protecting women who seek to access their fundamental reproductive rights.

But if you think far-right Republicans are done attacking abortion at the federal level after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe, think again.

Over the past year, the Republican-led House has tee’d up 15 votes meant to shut down some form of federal abortion access. They include repeated attempts to ban women in the military from crossing state lines when an abortion wasn’t available near their base; restrict access to Mifepristone; and divert funds to organizations that spread misleading information about reproductive health. Just last week, we voted on two bills aimed at restricting access to abortion: One would divert federal health care funding to “pregnancy centers” that refuse to provide information on abortion, and have been found to provide deceptive information to women. And a second would restrict the information on choice made available to college students who become pregnant.

So what does this mean? It means that the Republican Party is hellbent in going after each and every possible angle to stop women from access to abortion, even in the case of rape or incest.

And in June, we will see another landmark case on this issue play out as the Supreme Court decides whether or not it’s legal to mail mifepristone across state lines – a safe and legal drug that has been widely used for over two decades for women having miscarriages, D&Cs, medically necessary terminations and abortions. This case could ban the mailing of the drug even to states run by Democrats, making it extremely difficult to get an abortion, even where it’s legal.

With these salami tactics–in legislation, appropriation, and in state law–the GOP continues to prove what we’ve always known: Dobbs was the beginning, not the end.

If Republicans are able to take back the White House and the Senate this November, a federal abortion ban will be on the table -- and access everywhere will be at risk, even in states like Michigan that have taken action to protect the right to choose.

Those are very much the stakes in this election.

But we cannot do that alone. Those who want to continue the fight against access to abortion know how important it is as well – and you can bet they'll be spending huge sums of money to defeat us. Which is why I am asking for your help today:

Given the Roe anniversary, would you consider sending a message and contributing to our campaign for U.S. Senate in Michigan?

We know where the average American is on this issue: Michiganders of all stripes voted overwhelmingly to codify Roe in our constitution last November. It’s GOP politicians, obsessed with imposing their views on everyone else, who are leading our country backwards and making this country less and less safe for women and girls.

And if they are able to defeat us in November, they may get their wish.
