Dear Friends,
Tax filing season is here. Ahead of this year’s April 15th deadline, there are resources available to make filing season less stressful, and new tax credits that may help you and your family.
- Almost everyone can use a guided tax preparation software to file electronically through IRS Free File. Regardless of eligibility, any taxpayer can use Free File Fillable Forms to file online or request an automatic tax-filing extension.
- During tax season, Taxpayer Assistance Centers will have extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 - 8:30 AM and 4:30 – 6:00 PM through April 16th. Call 844-545-5640 to set up an appointment at the local Taxpayer Assistance Center at 135 High Street in Hartford.
- The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers no-cost tax preparation services to individuals and families who earned $64,000 or less in 2023. You can call 2-1-1 or visit 211ct.org to set up an appointment through VITA or submit information and upload documents here.
I worked with my colleagues in Congress to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, lowering costs for families and boosting funding to improve customer service at the IRS. Thanks to this legislation, new services are available to taxpayers, including a customer callback option for 95% of callers seeking live assistance, more in-person services at Taxpayer Assistance Centers, and an online portal for small businesses to file Form 1099 returns electronically.
If you make energy improvements to your home or business, or purchase an electric vehicle, you may be eligible for new tax incentives through the Inflation Reduction Act. Learn more about these incentives at CleanEnergy.gov.
Credits and deductions that could increase your refund are available to eligible taxpayers, such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Learn more here.
This week, I voted for bipartisan legislation that would provide tax relief to working families and small businesses, boosting the Child Tax Credit for 119,000 Connecticut families and restoring the R&D deduction for small businesses. I urge the Senate to pass this bill so families can benefit from this tax cut and will continue to work with my colleagues to deliver the full Child Tax Credit our nation’s children deserve.
