Join the May 21 Classified Day of Action in Sacramento
On May 21 classified professionals and their supporters from across the state will gather at the State Capitol in Sacramento to take part in a spirited rally and to celebrate the critical contributions made by classified school workers every day in our schools
The day of action, which will be held under the theme No Class Without Classified: Filling the Gaps to Educate California Students, will also be an opportunity to urge California Congressmembers to sign on to the Classified Workers Bill of Rights, a federal effort led by Massachusetts Senator Edward J. Markey that calls for living wages, good benefits, and fair working conditions for paraeducators, classroom assistants, bus drivers, custodial workers, and others.
Register now for the event and follow up with your local union to discuss transportation plans. A t-shirt and box lunch will be provided to those who register their attendance for the event. Please also use this flyer and work with your local union to urge your colleagues to participate as well.
CFT members energized following successful March Summit
Last week over 200 CFT members and guests took part in the CFT March Summit in Sacramento. The three-day event included a series of panels and workshops, where CFT members got a chance to strategize, connect, and build skills.
A highlight of the Summit was the memorial dinner held in honor of former CFT President Mary Bergan, who passed away last November. Mary was honored for her decades-long commitment to CFT, her leadership, and her enduring impact on the union.
During the final day of the Summit, the CFT State Council adopted a resolution creating a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in Educational Settings, and endorsed Adam Schiff for U.S. Senate. Look for more on the Summit in the upcoming edition of CFT United.

AFT Innovation Fund – April 21 deadline for Education Technology Grants
The AFT is now accepting applications for Education Technology Grants for the upcoming school year. Grants will range from $10,000 to $25,000, with consideration given to affiliate size when determining the amount. Applicants should focus on addressing the opportunities and challenges related to education technology in schools, including procurement, adoption and spread, as well as policies governing use and effective practices for teaching and learning. Grants are due April 21. More details here.
AFT’s Passion Meets Purpose conference
The AFT, the Albert Shanker Institute and the Center for American Progress hosted the “Passion Meets Purpose: Promising Pathways Through Experiential Learning” conference yesterday. In addition to AFT President Randi Weingarten, panelists from across the spectrum of labor, elected officials, private businesses and practitioners were on hand to learn and share strategies for making lasting change for kids and communities.
