Why am I so fired up about what we can do this year? Because Tuesday night, we got a glimpse of what we can do.

Marilyn Lands, a Democrat who was up for a seat in a district that previously voted with Trump, beat out Republican candidate Teddy Powell. This was a BIG win. Marilyn made her strategy abundantly clear from the get-go: protecting women’s rights. She campaigned on repealing a full abortion ban, restoring access to IVF, and protecting the right to contraceptives. Not only did she win - she won big. Marilyn’s strategy is a roadmap to winning back seats all across the South.

Remember, the road to taking back the House goes through the South. Not just in Alabama, where we can pick up another seat thanks to the new lines finally not disenfranchising Black Alabamians, but in places like North Carolina and Louisiana, where redistricting has finally put crucial seats back in play.

A couple weeks ago, I announced that I’m teaming up with the New Southern Majority SuperPAC of the Southern Poverty Law Center to maximize efforts to build progressive political power in the South. That’s a mouthful, but what it comes down to is this:

We’re all in to win in the South.

Tuesday night’s victory was a big deal. It’s just another example of what we accomplish when we come together. We really can win everywhere, folks. The next step? Making sure we grow the momentum we all know is there.
