Meet our new executive director.

Friend –

I could not be more thrilled to join the ACLU California Action as its new executive director.

I was born in Tijuana, Mexico, and raised on both sides of the border. I grew up two doors down from my grandparent's house, their home was full of love, laughter and the smell of freshly made flour tortillas. During those years, my parents and grandparents taught me that we must look after our neighbors, help those in need, and be active participants in our community. They made sure to model these values and expose me to the injustices and inequity that systems of oppression create. Their teachings, along with my lived experience as an immigrant, English-learner, and first-generation college student from an impoverished neighborhood, have fueled my determination to eradicate barriers to social justice.

As a result, I have spent my entire career in progressive advocacy, focusing on expanding civil rights and liberties. Most recently, I was the Chief Program and Strategy Officer for the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties where I fought to protect and expand the fundamental rights in California's second-most populous county and southern borderlands. Prior to joining the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, I served as public affairs director for Planned Parenthood of Northern California, where I helped pass legislation to improve Californians' access to health care.

I am so proud to now be able to call the incredible team of policy experts, organizers, and communicators here at ACLU California Action my colleagues. Together, we will continue to advocate for statewide legislation that will expand voting rights, ensure adequate housing for all, abolish slave labor in our prisons, hold police accountable, keep students in school, and more.

We cannot go back to the failed "tough-on-crime" policies of the past that further perpetuated systems of oppression. We must not pass policies that victimize and criminalize our most vulnerable community members. What we need now is the courage to take bold action. In these challenging times, California must lead by pursuing policies that address systemic inequities and promote social justice.

We cannot do this work alone. We need you and the more than 200,000 ACLU members in our state to help us hold our elected leaders accountable to our shared values. There are many challenges ahead of us, but it is the responsibility of we, the people, to form "a more perfect Union." I have never been so energized to get to work.
