This is concerning: San Francisco firefighters are dying at an alarming rate from cancer.

They're repeatedly exposed to cancer-causing carcinogenic PFAS chemicals from the protective clothing they wear every time they’re on the job, selflessly protecting our city. 

This is why I co-sponsored the first-in-the-nation legislation to ban PFAS chemicals in San Francisco firefighters' turnout gear. The San Francisco Firefighters Local 798 union joined us to rally outside City Hall and encourage other supervisors to support the ban. 

We've lost 300 active-duty and retired San Francisco firefighters from cancer-related causes since 2006. And this is unacceptable.

The ban would decisively protect the ones who protect us with new mandates to phase out cancer-causing turnout gear by June 30, 2026. But, we'll need money in the budget to acheive our goal.

When I’m mayor, I’ll ensure our firefighters are protected, and funding is available to replace their turnout gear as soon as possible. 

Because our city deserves a leader who will protect our frontline workers.
