Friend – We hope you are taking in all there is to enjoy about springtime in D.C. – the flowers, the patios, the longer days. We've been soaking up the sunshine, and the springtime rain, while we build a more just and free D.C. Here are highlights of our recent work and some ways that you can get involved. ACLU-D.C. Voter Guide 2024Voting is one of our most fundamental rights, and the D.C. primary election is on June 4. Bookmark our Voter Guide for everything you need to know to vote. The guide also shows where D.C. Council candidates stand on the critical issues affecting justice and freedom in the District – criminal justice reform, our First Amendment rights, D.C. statehood, and freedom from discrimination. Secure DC Act is the Law – for NowDistrict leaders recently passed the Secure DC Act, which includes provisions that put our safety and our rights at risk. Although we managed to amend the bill in important ways before it was passed, the law falls short of keeping us safe from abuse of power. We are especially concerned about the failed and ineffective "drug-free" zones that are now law. We are carefully watching how these zones and other parts of the Secure DC Act are implemented. And we continue to educate our communities about our rights and what to do if these rights have been violated. Check out our Know Your Rights materials, request a Know Your Rights training, and stay tuned for other ways to safeguard our rights. Get Your D.C. Statehood MerchPeople who live in Washington, D.C. are just like people in any other state. We are veterans, nurses, grocery store clerks, teachers, restaurant workers, volunteers, family members, and neighbors. And we deserve the right to vote and to govern ourselves. We deserve statehood now. Show your local pride and power our fight for D.C. statehood with totes, stickers, and mugs from our new D.C. Statehood store!
