Friend – You've been with us over the last four months during the 2024 legislative session in Juneau – a challenging time where we all fought hard for legislation that upholds our constitutional rights and pushed back on bad bills that erode the rights of Alaskans. Thank you for taking action, writing emails, testifying to members of the legislature, and so much more on issues ranging from queer and trans justice to criminal legal reform to First Amendment rights. We are sharing our legislative readout here, where we've summarized the wins, losses, and challenges ahead. While we have a handful of key takeaways regarding the policies put forward in the legislature this year, we know one thing to be true. Alaskan voices are the most powerful when it comes to defending our rights. The effort you take to speak up for communities whose rights are continuously targeted is incredibly meaningful, and even though we saw lawmakers ignore the will of the people and the issues Alaskans face, we must continue. It makes a difference, and our lawmakers work for us. We're already strategizing how we will advance critical issues that we care about, including addressing deaths in custody, parole reform, trans rights, election reform, and more. We hope you'll stick with us as we continue this work, and stay tuned for more updates. In solidarity and gratitude, Michael Garvey |
