# [#]Aloha,
I believe deeply that our country needs to heal.
Today there are too many people in America without affordable homes, without access to healthcare, and without economic security — and too many people WITH access to lethal firearms who have no business possessing them.
But perhaps even more importantly, too many of us have lost faith in a shared vision for our country, belief in a common purpose, and trust in our democracy.
For the last four decades, we have too often seen media voices, special interests, and politicians willing to use fear, resentment, and conspiracy theories to divide us against each other — just to capture an audience, gain market share, or win political influence.
Whether it is by stoking fear of immigrants, fueling resentment of minorities, spreading misinformation to demonize political opponents, or fabricating conspiracy theories that attempt to discredit our elections — these tactics are deeply cynical and corrosive to our sense of civic unity.
Over time, they erode our trust in each other and belief in each other’s basic goodness, replacing them with suspicion and paranoia — and too often lead to tragic acts of violence.
I believe the way to start healing the wounds caused by division, resentment, fear, and cynicism is through simple acts of kindness, understanding, and compassion towards others every day — especially towards those with whom we disagree.
Healing these wounds will also require us to refrain from demonizing others, distorting their motivations, or using fear or falsehoods in order to advance an argument.
I have said before that it is the responsibility of our leaders to inspire us to be our best, not tempt us to behave at our worst.
I want you to know that I take this responsibility very seriously, and going forward I will do everything in my power to put us on a path of healing.
I invite you to join me.
Mahalo,
Josh
