Democrats confirm Kamala Harris, Tim Walz for Presidential ticket at DNCC
Over the past week, Democrats
converged in Chicago to certify the party’s presidential ticket for the
presidential elections this year, and to convene on a general party
platform. The stage show attracted major attention across the country,
although an alliance of workers, socialists and progressives convened
outside the soiree demanding a change to Democrats’ steadfast support
for the Israeli apartheid regime. Anti-war protests outside have called
for an arms embargo and aimed to pressure the Biden-Harris
Administration to broker a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. (If the party’s official platform is anything to go by, no drastic changes can yet be expected.)
On Wednesday evening, a fight between Palestine solidarity organizers and officials in the Democratic Party went public,
revealing the DNC’s refusal to afford a speaking-slot on the convention
stage. Despite calls from sympathetic Democrats and influential allies (including the United Auto Workers) to provide an opportunity for protest surrogates to speak, the request went unfulfilled. On Thursday afternoon, Mother Jonespublished a draft speech that was prepared by Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman.

DC Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White arrested on bribery charges
Councilmember Trayon White Sr. was arrested late on Sunday afternoon by the FBI. In a release,
the Department of Justice alleged that White agreed to accept $156k in
cash payments to extend several contracts (valued at $5.2mil) related to
violence interruption services in DC. The FBI has video and photo
evidence of White accepting cash payments.
DC
political leaders have been responding to the news over the past week.
The DC Council is planning to remove White from his chairs of local
committees, and Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto also announced in a
press release her intent to hold “rigorous public hearings this fall to
evaluate the potential reach” of any further corruption. Several Ward 8
locals have also announced write-in campaigns for the Ward 8 elections —
White won his Ward 8 primary this year with just over 50% of the vote.
Violence
interrupters are a vital pillar upholding public safety in DC. The
programs received widened expansions of funding in the wake of the 2020
George Floyd Uprisings, when violence interruption efforts were
identified as a vital program necessary for delivering real public
safety to the people of DC. (Impact studies
on violence Interruption programs have shown long-term effects in
reducing gun violence.) In DC, there are two violence interruption
programs: one coordinated under the jurisdiction of Mayor Bowser (this
is the contracting associated with White’s bribery case), and another
coordinated by the DC Attorney General’s Office.
Workers in the DMV — KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! Overtime pay and wage theft teach-in planned for September 8
On September 8th, Metro DC DSA will be holding an overtime pay and wage theft teach-in
at Mt. Pleasant Library from 3 to 5pm. The event will include legal and
organizing experts who will explain how wage theft manifests in the
workplace and what workers can do if they find themselves victims of
these practices. RSVP for reminder and notices here.
This
teach-in is part of a wider series of labor law and organizing
programming planned by Metro DC DSA to occur over the next few months.
Stay tuned for future events and actions.
BRIEFS
Initiative 83’s ballot access fate reveals political opposition on the DC Council
As DC local election ballots
are being finalized by the local Board of Elections, ballot access for
Initiative 83 is still up in the air, having attracted significant
challenge from local opposition. If included on the ballot, Initiative
83 would propose two big changes to DC elections: ranked choice voting
and semi-open primaries which would allow registered independents to
vote in party primaries.
I83,
which has already submitted the required number of validated
signatures, has continued to attract opposition to ballot access from
factions within DC’s Democratic Party. The depth of this opposition was
revealed in an investigation published in Washington City Paper
this week, which outed at-large Councilmember Anita Bonds as political
lead in opposition to I83’s inclusion on the general election ballot. CM
Bonds’ efforts have been significant but so far unsuccessful, marked by
attempts to challenge the BOE’s independence and autonomy. Local
legislation has previously been introduced by CM Bonds that would significantly restrict the scope of future ballot initiatives.
Metro
DC DSA declined to endorse Initiative 83 when it was brought to
membership vote earlier this year. Although a majority of members voted
to endorse the initiative, the result (52% in favor) was not enough of a
majority required to provide formal chapter endorsement. (Read more: research on ranked-choice voting and semi-open primaries as published in Washington Socialist.)

Registration for Fall 2024 Reading Groups is open
Metro DC DSA’s famous reading groups are preparing for their Fall rollout, and all are invited to sign up. Groups begin after Labor Day and most will wrap before Christmas (unless you are reading the new translation of Capital Vol. 1).
These reading groups are a great way to meet new people, learn core
works connected to socialism and political economy, build our capacity
to learn and debate ideas and get connected to political education in
the chapter.
Fall offerings include two groups reading the brand new translation of Capital Vol. 1; an ecosocialism and political economy group reading The Price is Wrong: Why Capitalism Won’t Save the Planet; an Internationalism group reading Frantz Fanon’s classic Wretched of the Earth;
the Rent Strike reading group going through classic local and
international works on housing; a Family Abolition reading group reading
M.E. O’Brien’s latest book by that title; a Capitalism & Culture
group reading the best radical perspectives on “cultural” issues; a
Prisons and Resistance Since Attica: Abolition reading group reading the
Tip of the Spear; and a group for those interested in radical thinking around legal issues titled Marxism and The Law. Register to join one or more — most groups will meet online but with regular in-person social meetups to build group camaraderie.
Metro DC DSA Street Team monthly meeting — Saturday, September 7, 4pm
Build power in the DMV and
join the Metro DC DSA Street Team by attending our monthly meeting at
the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library on Saturday, September 7 at
4pm. This event is for anyone interested in getting active in the
chapter’s Street Team to build socialist power in the DMV.
The
Street Team hosts and attends community events to connect Metro DC DSA
and its campaigns with the community in the DMV in order to expand the
chapter’s base and build a more democratic society. We are interested in
talking to DMV residents to hear what is going on in their everyday
lives and talk about how many of these issues connect to our campaigns.
In
this meeting the Metro DC DSA Street Team will be discussing summer and
early fall events with a happy hour to follow. All are encouraged to
attend in person at MLK Memorial Library, 901 G St NW, Washington, DC,
room 401-F. RSVP here.
Got ideas for the chapter? Refine them at Socialist Shark Tank
Do you have a relatively
fleshed out idea of something you’d like the chapter to do, but struggle
a bit with how to implement it effectively, how to get it through our
procedures, how it might fit into our chapter’s work politically, or how
to recruit for it? Have you wished there was a better way to solicit
feedback on an idea than asking people you work with, posting on Slack,
or debating it at a GBM?
Well,
now there is: Introducing Socialist Shark Tank, a place for MDC DSA
comrades to come and present partially-developed ideas for new chapter
initiatives. We’ll have eight sessions over the next couple months,
starting Thursday, September 5, where a comrade will spend 10 to 30
minutes presenting an idea they have (something fairly substantive — a
campaign, a new working group, an event or event series, a significant
structure change, etc.) in some detail, and then the audience will ask
questions and give constructive feedback, all with the goal of refining
and strengthening the idea.
Presenters will sign up
in advance, and share their idea, in written and/or presentation
format, with the rest of the group at least five days in advance of the
meeting. If you’re interested in participating, either as a presenter or
just as a participant, please sign up here.
A schedule will follow once all presenters have signed up. There are
expectations for presenters, but anyone, new or old, should feel free to
join as a participant: this will be a great opportunity to learn new
things and see how ideas develop, and everyone’s input is valuable.

convincing MCPS to pause trainings by pro-Israel groups that have
incorporated a weaponized version of anti-Semitism in their curricula;
and compiled personal stories of bias and discrimination experience by

DNCC roundup
This
year’s DNCC produced a range of reactions among socialists, trade
unionists and progressive elements from within the Democratic Party.
Catch up on the discourse:
Rep Oscasio-Cortez’s speech at the DNCC was a betrayal of the Gaza movement — TheNation
From
former MDC DSA Steering Committee Chair Kareem E: “Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to lend her credibility to the Biden-Harris
administration’s false narrative around Gaza was a stinging slap in the
face.”
Bernie throws Kamala a curve ball — NYT
Sen.
Sanders, in his convention speech, sets forth an issue ecosystem for a
Harris administration to navigate; “a progressive policy reverie that
must have been music to the ears of every democratic socialist at the
United Center.” Here is his twelve-minute program.
Planning polarizing actions with positive outcomes “…
even once organizers grow comfortable with the idea that their actions
will be polarizing, crucial unanswered questions linger. Making people
take sides on an issue is one thing. Making sure they take your
side — crafting protests that compel members of the public to
sympathize with and support a group’s cause, rather than driving them
into the arms of the disapproving opposition — is another. So how, then,
can movements do that?” First of a two-part inquiry in The Forge via Portside
Also see Part 1 and Part 2
of a great PBS documentary from 2023 on how the Vietnam antiwar
movement built alliances and public buy-in — and faced Nixon and
Kissinger’s escalation plan down. It’s history that should not be
forgotten.
Leahy law if enforced would slow arms to Israel and IDF “But the beauty of the Leahy law is that it’s universal,” argues Peter Beinart in the NYT op-ed “Harris can change Biden’s policy just by upholding the law.”
“When asked about Gaza, Kamala Harris doesn’t have to invent a new
standard. She can just endorse the one enshrined in U.S. law. That won’t
change U.S. policy overnight. But it will send a message, to officials
such as [Secretary] Blinken and the officials Ms. Harris appoints if
elected president, that the Israel exception to the Leahy law must end.”
The Rotten Partnership Between the US Media and the Israeli Military Even
as their colleagues in Gaza are deliberately massacred, Western
journalists continue to play along with the IDF. “… the few Western
journalists who have been able to enter Gaza have almost exclusively
done so by embedding with the Israeli military on heavily supervised
excursions into the Strip. The IDF decides where the reporters go, what
they are allowed to see, and whom they are allowed to question.” The Nation, tx our comrade Dan S.
Inciting rioters in Britain was a test run for Elon Musk. Just see what he plans for America
The
presidential election is three months away. What if the billionaire
contests the result? What if he decides democracy is overrated? Even
with thousands of since laid-off content moderators on the job in 2021,
“vast swathes of the American population became convinced the vote had
been stolen and a violent mob almost pulled off a coup. Fast forward
four years, and we’re now in a very different — and significantly worse —
place.” The Guardian
Solar Panels Can Help To Fund School Resources
PG
Changemakers, Prince George’s NAACP, the South County Environmental
Justice Coalition and others recently took part in a community meeting
advocating use of solar panels in County schools (many large, flat
roofs!) with the savings used to increase teacher pay and improve school
resources. From The Intersection, Prince George’s County.

The flame of thought, the magnificence of art, the wonder of discovery, and the audacity of invention all belong to revolutionary periods when humanity, tired of its chains, shatters them and stops inebriated to breathe the breeze of a vast and free horizon. - Virgilia D'Andrea
