John,
This week, early voting began across several states, including Pennsylvania—which is widely regarded as a state that may determine the results of the 2024 presidential election.
But far more than the presidential race is at stake in Pennsylvania. Let’s break down the key races and opportunities:
-
The Pennsylvania Senate is currently under the control of anti-abortion politicians, with half of the seats up this cycle. Flipping just *three* state senate seats would create an even-split, allowing pro-choice legislators to benefit from tie-breaking votes.
-
Pro-choice legislators have a narrow majority in the Pennsylvania House—but we have the opportunity to protect and expand that majority, creating a pathway for critical abortion rights legislation.
- While Governor Josh Shapiro (a Vote Pro-Choice endorsed candidate!) is not up for reelection this cycle, other state-wide seats are, including Attorney General, Auditor General, and Treasurer.
- Pennsylvania has a critical Senate race: Democratic incumbent Bob Casey is up for reelection, and he must win in order for Democrats to maintain control of the Senate.
Abortion in Pennsylvania is banned at 24 weeks, and a web of onerous and medically unnecessary restrictions remain, like mandated counseling and waiting periods. Building pro-choice legislative bodies is key to dismantling these barriers and ensuring that the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare is accessible to all.
We’re working to ensure that voters know about every reason to turn out and every pro-choice candidate on their ballot, and investing in these state and local races will benefit the Harris-Walz campaign.
The stakes in Pennsylvania and around the country are high, so we’re using every tool in the toolbox to produce key victories at every level of the ballot. Thank you for supporting our work!
In gratitude,
The Vote Pro-Choice Elections Team
