Friend,
In the last several weeks it has been more clear than ever that millions of immigrants -- both documented and undocumented -- make crucial contributions to our communities.
Immigrants are working on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic as doctors, nurses, grocery store workers, janitors, housekeepers, and farmworkers. They're doing the work we need to fight against Covid-19.
But while immigrants are working hard to get us through this pandemic, the Trump Administration continues to attack them. Last month, President Trump signed an executive order limiting immigration into the United States by suspending new green cards. Don't get distracted. This policy has no practical benefits and the coronavirus is NOT an immigration issue. This is yet another move by the Trump Administration to distract Americans from the fact that America still doesn't have the tests, masks, and resources we need. The White House's poor pandemic response is the problem -- not immigrants.
Meanwhile, President Trump has signed an executive order forcing U.S. meatpacking plans to stay open, even though their lack of safety standards has caused 6,500 meat packing workers to be diagnosed with or quarantined for Covid-19. We have called on the Trump Administration [link removed] to go and work a shift alongside these workers, if production is so important. But it's been clear that the Trump Administration cares more about the profits of corporations than the health and lives of frontline workers.
Immigrants in detention centers are also feeling the effects of Covid-19. Social distancing is nearly impossible at the facilities and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has failed to provide detainees with basic resources such as masks, soap, or other protections. Advocates have called on the Administration to release detainees in order to help stop the spread of Covid-19 and save lives inside detention centers. ICE has only tested 1% of the detainee population so far, and 60% have tested positive. [link removed]
COVID-19 affects all of us, regardless of our immigration status or where we come from. Our response to the global pandemic must include all Americans, standing side by side and working together.
This is why we have been proud to join a broad coalition of faith, civil rights, business, and immigration organizations from across the political spectrum to make it clear that #AllOfUs are in the fight against COVID-19 together. Learn more about the campaign and ways you can get involved at www.allofuscare.com. [link removed]
Among those currently on the frontlines fighting COVID-19 are hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients whose future in this country is uncertain. Any day now, the Supreme Court is expected to make a decision on whether or not DACA should stay in place. Many DACA recipients are doctors, nurses, first responders, teachers, engineers, and business owners. They are paying taxes, going to school, raising families, and helping lead the fight against COVID-19. Show DACA recipients you stand with them by posting a message of support on social media using the hashtag #HomeIsHere.
In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau has once again extended the self-response period through October 31. Filling out the Census is super important because the data that is collected this year will be used to make decisions for the next 10 years -- so we only have one opportunity to get this right. Make sure you and your family are counted. Fill out your Census TODAY. [link removed]
Already filled out your census? Talk to your family and friends (from a safe distance) and make sure they also participate, regardless of immigration status. Everyone needs to be counted.
Finally, Giving Tuesday is a global day of goodwill and charity that usually happens in the fall. But this year, a second day called #GivingTuesdayNow was added to fundraise for unprecedented needs caused by Covid-19. If you're able, help us contribute to farm workers and day laborers who are doing essential work doing the pandemic. You can donate here.
Those are all the updates for now. Stay tuned for the latest developments on essential workers, DACA and all things immigration.
Stay safe and healthy,
Juana ----
