Friend --
As the COVID-19 crisis disrupts our daily lives, including our ability to work, pay rent and send our kids to school, we need to ensure working people can make ends meet, not hand tax breaks to the richest 1% and finance bailouts for corporations. Renters and homeowners know cancelling rent and mortgage payments is the only way to prevent the housing crisis from reaching catastrophic levels. So far, our Governor has been silent on this. We will keep the pressure on.
In the meantime, there’s a new opportunity to win rent/mortgage cancellation nationwide: the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar on 4/17.
The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act (H.R. 6515) includes:
- suspension of rent and mortgage payments,
- relief fund for landlords who need help
- nationwide zero accumulation of debt for renters or homeowners
- zero negative impact on credit ratings or rental histories
Rent was due last week, but only one member of the California delegation to the US House has taken a stand by co-sponsoring the bill. That’s why we’re throwing down with our partners at People’s Action and Housing Now! on a statewide phone zap to drive calls to our California Representatives today.
Will you join me by calling your Representative and asking them to co-sponsor H.R. 6515, and ensure it’s in the next stimulus package? <[link removed]>
This click-to-call tool makes it simple and easy.
Policies that were considered impossible to win two months ago are now within reach. But our success rides or dies on how much pressure people like you and me put on our Representatives — say, 50,000 calls worth of pressure.
You can help us reach our goal of driving 50,000 calls to Congress about H.R. 6515. If we can’t escape fear about housing costs, our Representatives shouldn’t be able to escape our demands for relief.
CALL YOUR REP ABOUT H.R. 6515!! <[link removed]>
The choices our government makes now to help us weather the outbreak of the coronavirus can also set a better course for the future of our communities. Now is the time for us to unite across our differences and make policy choices that help every-day people in pursuit of a safe and thriving country. If Congress refuses to provide relief to renters and homeowners, we will have no choice but to escalate our tactics and claim it ourselves!
When we fight, we win!
