** Autumn Budget is a step in the right direction for alcohol policy
------------------------------------------------------------
On 30 October 2024, the Chancellor of the Exchequer set out Labour’s first budget in almost 15 years, announcing changes to taxes and government spending to the nation.
Offering a key moment for the Government to take action to address alcohol harm, it included three notable announcements related to Alcohol Duty. This is a type of tax paid by companies that produce alcohol, who over the years have enjoyed huge profits from alcohol. However, they have not paid their fair share of the cost of tackling the harm that it causes.
Read about the measures announced and our response in our Autumn Budget blog.

How do we talk about alcohol? New framing toolkit developed
------------------------------------------------------------
We're excited to share an evidence-based framing toolkit on ‘How to talk about alcohol’. The toolkit helps tell a new story about alcohol, broadening understanding of the many ways alcohol causes harm. This new story can help build a movement for change.
The toolkit comes after three years of extensive research and aims to guide public communication on alcohol to deepen understanding and build public support for effective action to reduce alcohol-related harm. The project was commissioned by Alcohol Change UK and led by the University of Stirling, with support from Frameworks UK.

------------------------------------------------------------
Researchers from The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have published a first-of-its-kind global study into digital alcohol-reduction tools.
The research suggests that alcohol industry-funded webtools and apps use covert ‘misinformation strategies’. These include omitting important public health information, and ‘nudging’ us to drink more alcohol.

** Northern Ireland gears up for minimum unit pricing (MUP)
------------------------------------------------------------
Stormont’s Health minister Mike Nesbitt has indicated he is to seek Executive approval for introducing minimum unit pricing for alcohol in Northern Ireland. Mr Nesbitt said he wanted to work with fellow Assembly Members to determine a suitable minimum price and to help shape the new law.
Minimum unit pricing (MUP) is not a tax and does not generate income for the government. It works by ensuring that very cheap and very strong alcohol – like cheap, strong cider – is made less attractive to buy through price increases. Evidence consistently shows that this leads to less of this type of alcohol being produced and consumed and can improve and save lives.
