John,
Like you, I am profoundly concerned about the incoming administration and what Republican control of the federal government means for our country. These results sting.
Right now, lots of us are considering the most effective ways to use our time and energy to defend our democracy. At the NDRC, we have a tried-and-true strategy that’s delivered fairer maps and fairer representation, and we are ready to lean our weight into those efforts. As Executive Director of this organization, I may be biased, but I truly think this is some of the most important work we can do during the incoming administration and leading up to the next nationwide redistricting cycle.
Earlier this year, the NDRC published our 10 Year Plan with our strategic roadmap. We will refine our work as we continue to fully understand the changes and chances coming out of this year’s election results, but this election was just one part of the plan. We remain steadfastly focused on the fundamentals of our 10 Year Plan:
* Best-in-class mapping: The NDRC Geospatial Analytics Department will continue to lead the development of best-in-class mapping tools. Technology and the use of AI are changing the game rapidly, and our investments will ensure we have the best tools available to support the mapping and analysis of congressional and legislative redistricting plans for Democrats nationwide.
* Electoral investment: The NDRC and our affiliates have a strategic plan for political and electoral engagement throughout the decade, to build and shift power so that the right people are in the right places in advance of the next redistricting cycle. And looking ahead to 2025, we have opportunities such as state house elections in Virginia, a state supreme court seat up in Wisconsin, and three state supreme court seats up in Pennsylvania.
* Grassroots mobilization and public education: As we inch towards the 2030 Census, we need to continue to build our community of pro-democracy, fair maps supporters so we have the capacity we need to mobilize efforts that build toward fair redistricting.
* Redistricting reform: And of course, we’re committed to advancing reforms and policy changes where redistricting processes need improvement.
I deeply believe in the power of this organization and its supporters. I’m committed to doing everything I can to position the NDRC to be successful in ensuring fairness in our democracy. Are you with me? If so, please add your name here to recommit to the long-term fight for fairness. [[link removed]]
Together, we’ll ensure states with independent redistricting commissions run full and transparent processes that result in fair maps, call out elected officials who are working to draw bad maps, build and participate in a strong coalition that exemplifies fair map-drawing practices, and support legislation to support fair maps.
We can do this. We have a smart plan, the right team, and a truly remarkable community of supporters all across the country. So if you’re onboard — if you’re ready to get back to work — let me know by adding your name here. [[link removed]]
Thank you — and more soon.
Marina
