“We don’t want women to die in childbirth, we don’t want anyone to be terrorized by gender-based violence and we don’t want anyone to have their futures derailed by substandard health systems,” UNFPA’s Washington chief, Sarah Craven , told Politico.

But that’s exactly what could happen if the Trump administration defunds UNFPA next year just like it did the last time President Trump was in office.

We are hoping that this second Trump Administration sees the value in delivering lifesaving care for women and girls and that there is a different decision made this time around. But we are also preparing for an uncertain future — one that could jeopardize lifesaving care and programs for women and girls in conflict settings like Haiti, Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond.

This year, the United States government is set to contribute a historic $181 million to UNFPA, making the U.S. the organization’s top donor for two consecutive years, in 2022 and 2023.

But the U.S. President has the power to defund UNFPA with a simple stroke of a pen. If President Trump proceeds with defunding UNFPA’s budget — like he did in his first term — women in some of the world’s most devastating crises will lose access to lifesaving services.

In Afghanistan, where UNFPA would no longer be able to operate 13 mother and child health centers, which are the only accessible health and counseling services for women in these locations.

In Bangladesh, where U.S. funding has helped provide maternal health care, family planning, gender-based violence prevention and response, and emergency support to more than 200,000 women and girls living in the refugee camp.

In Venezuela, where loss of U.S. funding will severely impact maternal health, violence prevention, and response efforts. Critical services like mobile clinics, equipment, and training will be halted, affecting over 10,000 women and girls. This will lead to increased maternal mortality, vulnerability to violence, and limited access to essential healthcare.

And in more than 150 countries around the world, where women and girls are counting on our support.
