John — I went
on MSNBC last week to discuss Donald Trump’s Cabinet selections, and I
want to share what I said:

Before the election, some people hoped that Trump would act differently in
a second term — focused on building a legacy or unburdened by the need to
run for another term. And I don’t think it’s too early to conclude his
second term will be different; it is likely to be worse. The nature of his
nominees demonstrates that he has changed — just not for the better.

Trump’s picks are far more extreme than anyone he nominated the first time
around.

Matt Gaetz. Pam Bondi. Pete Hegseth. Tulsi Gabbard. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
And not just his nominees, but who he is surrounding himself with,
including Elon Musk.

While I am awaiting my Senate committee assignments, I know the
confirmation process for these nominees will be interesting and unlike any
we have seen before, including questions about sexual assault, fondness
for foreign despots like Bashar al-Assad, and failure to accept science
and facts.

Donald Trump seems to be daring the Senate to stand up to him. He’s trying
to show off his dominance and disrupt the whole government enterprise. I’m
encouraged that for his most extreme and unqualified nominee, Matt Gaetz,
there was pushback from some of my GOP colleagues.

But Trump’s choices for the top legal positions are a sign that he views
the Justice Department not as a department representing the American
people and their public interest, but as a department representing
himself, to protect him from criminal and civil liability. To be his
shield and his sword to go after his enemies.

A lot of hard work awaits us,
John. But just as before, I will
continue to be relentless in my efforts to make the economy work for
everyone and to protect our democracy — no matter who is in the White
House.

More soon,

Adam
