Dear John,

I live in a city that is defined by its connection to the rest of the
world, in a state that determines the future of this country, and in a
nation that, at its core, still aspires to equality, liberty and freedom
for all.

Though none of these places are perfect and the world presents challenges
that our forefathers could not have dreamed of, we are lucky to be alive
at this place and time… even with, and maybe especially because, our
country stands on the edge of the end of what Lincoln called The Last Best
Hope of Earth.

Precious few generations have had the chance to fight to save and fully
realize the ideals that make America so special. Think of the patriots who
won our freedom from the British empire; the brave souls who gave their
lives to end slavery and restore the Union; those who landed under heavy
fire on Normandy beaches 80 years ago to fight fascism abroad in order to
protect democracy here at home; and the freedom marchers and riders who
risked their lives to ensure our country could live up to its promise of
equality under the law. Like those generations, we are faced with a stark
choice: submit to tyranny (the Empire; the Confederacy; the Nazis; Jim
Crow) or stand and fight.

You are reading this because you understand the grave task before us, the
extreme danger of a new, emerging tyranny in America. I don’t have to
spell out what we’re up against or the consequences to future generations
if ours is found wanting.

So to you and every person willing to do what they can with what they have
where they are: I am forever grateful. We are a people who choose to
fight, no matter the odds, no matter the setbacks. Those who came before
have shown us the way and remind us what we are made of.

Let’s enjoy the days ahead — time with family and friends, time to relax
and recharge, time to count our blessings — and emerge ready for the
fight.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from ours,

Beto
