Hi John,
For the last two weeks, I’ve been watching the COP29 climate negotiations unfold. And it ended without the outcome we all fought so hard for. Rich countries — including the United States — failed to pay what we owe. These countries placed profits over people and left vulnerable countries with no choice but to accept a bad deal.1
But our work does not end here. In one year, world leaders will gather for COP30 in Brazil. They will bring plans designed to stop our planet heating up and stopping the worst impacts of the climate crisis.2 Everyone is looking to Brazil’s President — Lula da Silva — for leadership.
Brazil's role as COP30's host gives them huge influence over the direction these climate talks take. Over the coming year, they must use it to drive countries to adopt ambitious plans to phase out fossil fuels and ramp up renewable energy.
John, President Lula wants the world to see him as a climate champion. This makes him vulnerable to public pressure. Will you add your voice to our message to Brazil's president: be the climate leader the world needs?
Climate leadership and just energy solutions already exist in Brazil. Just last week, 350 Brazil and our local partners in the Amazon launched Energy of the People3 — a campaign to give everyone access to clean renewable energy, grounded in local experiences and knowledge.
President Lula could be an ally and support justice-based renewable energy projects like this in Brazil and beyond, by encouraging world leaders to commit to ambitious climate plans.
This is why we need to send him a message from our global climate movement. John, can you sign this letter to President Lula to ask him to be the climate leader we need?
COP30 will be a pivotal moment for the climate movement. It could be the first COP with Indigenous Peoples co-hosting the negotiations4, rich countries paying for what they owe to poorer ones and full commitments for ambitious climate plans. Or we could have another COP run by fossil fuel lobbyists who push our planet further into climate chaos for their profit. And with Donald Trump in the White House, we need other world leaders to step up.
Real grassroots climate leadership exists in Brazil: the Energy of The People campaign is proof of that. President Lula should take note, follow the lead of the people of Brazil, and show the same leadership on the international stage.
Thank you,
