Most of our hospitals make their money through performing elective surgeries on privately insured patients. This means that the hospitals most likely to go bankrupt are ones that serve low-income communities.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
We can fund our hospitals through global budgeting, a national system that provides a set budget for each hospital, broken into monthly stipends. This would ensure that hospitals receive a steady stream of money, based on need.
Additionally, a single payer healthcare system would remove the incentive for hospitals to treat patients with private insurance over patients on Medicare or Medicaid.
We need to pass Representative Jayapal’s Medicare for All bill. It would provide comprehensive healthcare for every person in this country and ensure that we fund our hospitals in a sustainable and equitable way.
Chris Coons works to keep the profit motive in our healthcare system that leads to hospital closures, higher costs, and rationing of care. I’m running because Medicare for All is the pragmatic solution to save money and lives.
